The congenital heart anomalies are not uncommon. Early detection and technique as well as clinical implications and management are the main objective of conducting fetal echocardiography.
Cardiac anomalies are estimated to occur in 8-9 fetuses of every 1000 live birth. Cardio- vascular anomalies are frequently associated with other congenital anomalies, because heart is among the last organ to develop completely in the embryo. The very high frequency of congenital heart disease(CHD)among spontaneous abortions is well established. More than 100 genetics mutations identified to cause heart defects. Some environments factors, most important Rubella virus infection, certain medicines, alcohol use, diabetes and phenyl ketonuria etc also affect fetal heart.
Success in conducting echocardiography needs good understanding of cardiac anotamy, Physiology and hemodynamics.
If cardiac anomaly suspected, then the issue to be discussed with pediatrician and gynecologist for proper management and planning including parents counseling and decision.
Common interesting fetal and postnatal cardiac defects i.e. VSD, ASD, AV canal defects, AP window, Fallot’s tetrology, PDA, Univentricle, Hypoplastic let heart syndrome, TA and TGA etc will be briefly presented with reference to clinical scenario.
