腹部超音波スクリーニング検査は任意型検診に広く用いられ，肝・胆道・膵・腎などの腹部臓器のがんの早期診断に寄与していると考えられている．しかし，その実施方法や所見の記載方法が標準化されていないため，がん検診としての精度や有効性の評価が困難であった．2011年7月に日本消化器がん検診学会から，超音波スクリーニングの精度保持のための条件を示す実施基準とがんに対するカテゴリー判定基準からなる腹部超音波がん検診基準が発行された．現在，微修正および事後指導区分などの追加を行ったうえで，日本超音波医学会，日本人間ドック学会など関連する学会に諮り共通のガイドラインとして普及させる方向で検討が進められている．将来的には腹部超音波スクリーニング検査のがん検診としての有効性評価に結び付けることを目指している．

Abdominal ultrasonography as a health checkup has been considered to be useful for the early detection of cancer in abdominal organs such as the liver, pancreas, bile duct, kidneys, and so on. However, because of the lack of standardization of the procedure or assessment criteria, its effectiveness has not been evaluated objectively. In September 2011, the Guideline for Abdominal Ultrasound Cancer Screening was published by the Japanese Society of Gastroenterological Cancer Screening. This Guideline is composed of two chapters: Chapter 1, titled Standard Procedure for Abdominal Ultrasound Cancer Screening, and Chapter 2, titled Categorized Criteria for Abdominal Ultrasound Cancer Screening. With the collaboration of the Japan Society of Ningen Dock, the Japan Society of Ultrasonics in Medicine, and other related societies, the contents of the Guideline are being reviewed to make it perfect. The final goal of the Guideline is to evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasound screening in decreasing the number of cancer deaths.
