Ultrasonic diagnosis of kidney and urinary tract diseases: ultrasonic features of renal cell carcinoma

We analyzed ultrasonic (US) features of 311 renal cell carcinoma (RCC) cases detected by US screening. Important findings of RCC were as follows: 1) hyperechoic tumor with low echogenicity; 2) iso/hypoechoic tumor; 3) heterogeneous (mosaic) tumor; 4) tumor with marginal hypoechoic zone (35.9%), cyst in tumor (72.4%), and protrusion from the surface of the kidney (90.4%); 5) remarkable color signal in the tumor and the margin of the tumor; 6) enlarging tumor on follow-up; and 7) cystic tumor with thickened wall and septum, solid component in the tumor, and color signal of the wall, septum, and solid component. The US feature of angiomyolipoma (AML) was a hyperechoic tumor with high echogenicity. CT examination is quite useful for differential diagnosis of RCC and AML (without fat component: RCC, with fat component: AML). From now on, we hope many more RCC cases will be detected by popularizing abdominal US screening.
