US elastography is used to assess the mechanical properties of the tissues. Different elastography methods are available and a number of studies have been published over the years. To help the users to understand the basic principles and the clinical applications of US elastography, as well as its advantages and limitations, guidelines and recommendations have been produced by the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology(EFSUMB)and subsequently by the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology(WFUMB).
The common goal of these guidelines is to clarify the terminology and the basic principles of the elastography techniques. The main difference between the WFUMB guidelines and recommendations and those of the EFSUMB is that the WFUMB guidelines covers some of the topics in greater detail and are more clinically-oriented and consensus-based. In particular, the WFUMB guidelines are divided in three parts, one dedicated to basic principles, and the other two to the diagnose of liver diseases and breast diseases.
The noninvasive assessment of diffuse liver disease by means of US-elastography has gained great interest and lately, also the European Association for the Study of the Liver(EASL)felt the need to produce guidelines on non-invasive tests for evaluation of liver disease severity and prognosis.
