【Objective】
To determine prognostic utility of maximal and minimal left atrial volume (LAV) assessed by 3D echocardiography (RT3DE).
【Methods】
A total of 602 patients (66±16 years, 346 men) who had undergone RT3DE was enrolled. From full-volume datasets, end-systolic and end-diastolic LAV corrected to body surface area (LAVImax, LAVImin) was measured using quantitative software (3DQadv). Patients were divided into two groups by cut-off value (mean+2SD in normal database) of LAVI. Patients were followed up for a median of 695 days, and cardiac death and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) were recorded.
【Results】
During follow up, 31 patients died, and 118 had MACE. Both LAVImax and LAVImin had an equivalent power for predicting MACE. Although both LAVImax and LAVImin were significant for predicting mortality, LAVImin is more clearly discriminate between two groups compared to LAVImax (Figure).
【Conclusion】
Both LAVImax and LAVImin are useful for predicting morbidity and mortality, but LAVImin has a higher correlation for future cardiac death.
