We used ultrasonography to follow a case of amebic colitis in a man aged 48 years during the course of treatment. Gray-scale ultrasonography revealed marked and discrete thickening of the bowel wall: specifically, thickening of the submucosal layer. Color Doppler ultrasonography showed hypervascularity of the mucosal and submucosal layers. Thickening and hypervascularity of the bowel wall disappeared promptly when treated. Reports including ultrasonographic findings of amebic colitis are rare. Information provided by ultrasonography proved useful in detecting bowel abnormalities of amebic colitis as well as in evaluating the effects of therapy on amebic colitis.
