Importance of Hairbrush Sign in Ultrasonographic Diagnosis of Liver Cirrhosis

We used a 7.5 MHz annular array probe to diagnose 70 cases of diffuse liver disease. Degree of irregularity of liver surface detected by this probe and that observed on laparoscopy were related. The probe also visualized low echoic belts from the depressed area of the liver surface. We term this finding the hairbrush sign (HS). Clinically, this sign was positive when the liver surface was irregular, especially in cases of liver cirrhosis. The hairbrush sign appeared most regularly in autopsy livers with advanced liver cirrhosis. The sign, however, did not always appear when the liver surface was irregular. These observations suggest that the hairbrush sign is more likely to be associated with advanced liver fibrosis than with liver surface irregularity.
