Cyclic Alteration of Mitral Valve Thickness in the Age-Related Thick Mitral Valve

Although alteration in mitral valve (MV) thickness has been observed during the cardiac cycle in patients with mitral valve prolapse (MVP), data regarding cyclic alteration in MV thickness in the age-related thickened MV are limited. We measured MV thickness variation in age-related thickened MV under diastole (D) and systole (S) at their thickest points on the echocardiogram and calculated percent of change in thickness from systole to diastole (%ΔW) using the following equation: %ΔW=(D-S)X100/D. The subjects were 35 patients with age-related thickened MV (D≥4 mm, aged 72±13 years), 8 with mitral valve prolapse (aged 41±18 years), 10 with rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS) (aged 66±9 years), and 25 control subjects (D≤3.9 mm, aged 50±16 years). The %ΔW in age-related thickened MV was greater than that in controls (59±8% vs 35±7%, p2 vs 17±44 mm2, p
