Color Doppler Signals on Gastroduodenal Motility after a Meal (1st report)

We recently applied color Doppler ultrasoundgraphy for the observation of the luminal contents passing through the pylorus. We could show the color signal displayed as an one-way output on FFT-analysis. The signal was showed in healthy volunteers at a higher rate after the liquid meal (9/10) than the solid meal (3/10). It was displayed in 24 out of 35 patients (classification of disease: 29 persons with gastritis, 3 persons with gastric ulcer, and 3 persons with Non Ulcer Dyspepsia [NUD]) after the liquid meal. The signal appeared as a pattern of either forward flow or forward flow alternate with short and weak backward flow in healthy controls. There were two types in normal pattern. On the other hand it showed to-and-fro flow in some of patients. The type of signal appeared in 9 out of 35 patients (26%): 24% (7/29) of total patients with gastritis, 67% (2/3) of those with gastric ulcer, and none of those with NUD (0/3). The maximum velocity of the dietary contents through the pylorus was 5∼22 cm/sec in healthy controls. Color Doppler examination is may be useful for the evaluation of the gastroduodenal motility in undisturbed conditions.
