Experimental and Clinical Study on Tissue Characterization of Prostate Using Amplitude Image and Mean Frequency Image

Ultrasonic tissue characterized using the textural features of two new images. An amplitude modulated(AM) image and a mean frequency(FM) image were directly constructed by a radio frequency signal. The system was applied to the study of graphite phantom and in vivo prostate. The reproducibility of this system was confirmed by a basic experiment using three kinds of phantoms, each with a different frequency dependent attenuation. Furthermore, this system was applied clinically (normal prostate: 10 cases; benign prostatic hypertrophy: 18 cases; and prostatic cancer: 11 cases) with the transrectal method. A total of 14 parameters for first-order and second-order textural statistics were calculated in this experiment.
