Intrapericardial Fluid Flow Detected by Color Doppler Echocardiography: Report of A Case with Acute Pericarditis

A 58-year-old man with acute pericarditis was reported in which pericardial fluid flow detected by color Doppler echocardiography. In the acute phase with pericardial effusion, the flow of pericardial fluid indicated the red color signal toward the apex at systole, and the blue color signal toward the annulus at early diastole. After six months, however, there was no color flow signal with the disappearance of the pericardial effusion. This signal of pericardial fluid flow needed to be differentiated from that of the intrapericardial blood flow due to cardiac rupture after acute myocardial infarction or aortic dissection. It is suggested that the echo source of the pericardial fluid flow was blood cell components or fibrous strands exuded from the pericardium, and that the flow was produced by uneven intrapericardial pressure due to pericardial adhesion or the mechanical effect of the beating heart.
