We measured the Liver Index in 206 cases of histologically diagnosed chronic liver diseases and in 192 cases healthy controls. We then used this index to assess the objective diagnosis of cirrhosis of liver by ultrasonography. The Liver Index increased in accordance with the pathological progression of chronic liver diseases. The incidence of a Liver Index exceeding 0.65 also increased in accordance with the same progression, being especially and significantly high in patients with cirrhosis of the liver compared to the groups that did not include patients with cirrhosis of the liver (P
