A continuous wave Doppler transducer for cardiac monitoring has been newly developed. The transducer with an ultrasonic carrier frequency of 2.5 MHz is horse-shoe in shape, 15 g (86 g when including the cord) in weight and 17×20×40 mm in size. A circular plate made of polyurethan-gel was used for angulation of the transducer. The transducer was fixed with a rubber band on the anterior chest wall. The Doppler signal was analyzed with a commercially available ultrasound Doppler system (Toshiba SSH-65A). The mitral and ejection flow patterns were obtained in the supine and standing positions, and before and after exercise in the standing position. The peak velocities of ejection flow and the rapid filling phase in the mitral flow could be recorded in the supine and standing positions and they increased after exercise. Thus, the transducer may provide a new cardiac monitoring method.
