In-Utero Diagnosis of Pulmonary Atresia with Intact Ventricular Septum Using Color Flow Mapping

Three cases of pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum were examined in vivo using color flow mapping for the purpose of antenatal diagnosis. In these cases, we observed the following findings: 1) extremely dilated right atrium, 2) marked tricuspid regurgitation, 3) blood flow signal in the pulmonary artery from the aorta through the ductus artery. So the blood flow direction was opposite to that normally present in the fetus.
Pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum consists of complete atresia of the pulmonary valve associated with intact ventricular septum. In pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum, pulmonary blood flow depends on the ductus arterious. Infants with this condition need immediate and special attention including administration of prostaglandins.
