We present here our echocardiographic findings of two cases of complete transposition of the great arteries with straddling mitral valve before and after Jatene's operation.
The mitral valve had three leaflets with cleft, and the chordae of the anterior leaflet were attached to the anterior part of the right side of the ventricular septum in both cases.
After Jatene's operation, the patch of ventricular septal defect was deviated to the right ventricle wihout disturbing the movement of the mitral valve. Mitral regurgitation was detected in both cases, and one case with a ventricular septal defect of posterior extension showed tricuspid regurgitation by Doppler echocardiography. Left ventricular outflow tract obstruction caused by a straddling mitral valve was not observed.
Echocardiography is useful for evaluating this anomaly before and after Jatene's operation. Careful follow up is important to check for postoperative regurgitation of the atrioventricular valves.
