The purpose of the present study is to clarify the accuracy for measuring the thickness of muscle and subcutaneous fat by means of ultrasonic B-mode system (ALOKA ECHO CAMERA, LS SSD-280). The thickness of subcutaneous fat and muscle at forearm, upper arm, subsucapla, abdomen, thigh and leg for 6 human subjects were measured every 2 times over again at different days by means of ultrasonic B-mode method. The differences of ultrasonic values between 2 different measurement days were below 1 mm for muscle and subcutaneous fat, and there were no significant differences between both measurement values. After the ultrasonic measurements for muscle and fat thickness at upper arm, thigh and abdomen of human cadaver of 1 year after death the same measurement sites were cut open by surgical knife and the thickness of muscle and subcutaneous fat (and skin) were measured directly by slide calipers. The muscle thickness were 17.5 mm of mean values (1.3 mm of standard deviation) at every measurement sites by direct caliper method (D-method) and 17.0 mm (1.3 mm) by ultrasonic method (U-method). The percent ratios of U-method to D-method (U/D ratio, calculated by the equation of (D-U)/D) was 1.8% (0.5%). The subcutaneous fat thickness were 5.0 mm(0.3 mm) by D-method and 4.8 mm (0.3 mm) by U-method. U/D ratio was 2.7% (0.5%). There were no significant differences of muscle and fat thickness between both methods. It is considered that the ultrasonic B-mode linear scan method is useful for measurement of subcutaneous fat and muscle thickness from view point of sports sciences, human biology and kinantholopology.
