Last one year and 10 months 23 patients who had various types of liver tumor histologically diagnosed by ultrasound-guided liver biopsies or surgeries were studied. The enhanced ultrasonography (EUS) by carbon dioxide microbubble injection into hepatic artery turned out useful.
Findings of EUS were classified into 4 types: 1) hyperechoic change, 2) isoechoic change, 3) hypoechoic change, and 4) marginal spotty hyperechoic change. The technique also identified rim sign in some cases.
Eleven out of 13 hepatocellular carcinoma nodules (85%) showed hyperechoic changes, while 7 of 9 (78%) cases of metastatic liver tumor showed hypoechoic changes (p This study also indicated that the EUS is superior to other image diagnoses in detectability of microlesions.
