A New Method for the Evaluation of Left Ventricular Function by Simultaneous Recording of Two-dimensional Echocardiograms and Left Ventricular Pressure

 Simultaneous recording of two-dimensional echocardiograms (2D-echo) and pressure in cardiac chambers provides significant informations about cardiac performance. In this study a new rapid analog-digital converter was applied for a simultaneous display of left ventricular (LV) pressure with 2D-echo to assess LV function in ten patients, six with atrial septal defect, two normals, and two with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The digitized pressure was exhibited as an alphanumerical number at a sampling rate of 50/s synchronous to 2D-echo image rate on a cathode ray tube. Circumferential and longitudinal stresses (σc and σ1) at enddiastole and endsystole were obtained based on three different axes of non-prolate elliptic LV. The mean values of calculated stress in three groups were as listed in table 1. Comparison of these values with those determined by angiocardiography showed excellent correlations (r=0.97 in σc, r=0.94 in σ1). This newly developed technique for a simultaneous display of pressure and 2D-echo was useful for the evaluation of LV function and promises further applications for the assessment of LV function under various interventions.
