In Hong Kong, there is an ultrasound working group overlooking the obstetric and gynaecological (O&G) ultrasound training in the public healthcare system. All O&G doctors and midwives have to undergo a formal structured training program and pass an examination before they can be allowed to perform basic O&G ultrasound independently. The training program included a theoretical course and practical training. The latter included a minimum requirement of 100 dating scan, 200 mid-trimester morphology scan, 50 growth scan in the third trimester, and 30 gynaecological scan. The examination included an internal as well as an external assessment. To perform first trimester sonography for nuchal translucency, certificate of competence in the 11-13 Weeks Scan by the Fetal Medicine Foundation (UK) is required. The training for level II and III obstetric ultrasonography is included in a 3-year maternal fetal medicine (MFM) subspecialist training program which is targeted to a O&G specialist. To ensure quality, continuous education, regular meetings, auditing performance and outcomes are essential.
