Educational program of ultrasound for medical students is not systematically constituted and each medical school has its own program. Education for resident doctors also depends on each teaching hospital. Thus, there is difference in the degree of understanding of ultrasound medicine in young doctors in Japan. Early exposure to ultrasonics（ultrasound examination and ultrasound research）and sustainable educational services are quite important for them. The Japan Society of Ultrasonics in Medicine（JSUM）contributes to continuous education of ultrasound technology and its application to medical practice. The education committee holds several meetings regularly in a year. The Educational Session is held in conjunction with the annual scientific meeting of JSUM in spring. There are about 20 teaching sessions including basic ultrasound technology and ultrasound practice in various fields such as heart, abdomen, breast, thyroid, urinary organ, OB-Gyn and so on. The Ultrasound Diagnostics Courses are more focused educational courses for those who want to be an expert. The educational committee determines the themes for the course every year. In 2016，for example, there will be 6 courses regarding 1）ultrasonic diagnostics, 2）echocardiography（main theme: valvular heart disease），3）abdominal ultrasound（main theme: how to interpret the health check manual），4）breast（main theme: ductal cancer），5）body surface ultrasound（main theme: skin, head, neck and locomotory system）and 6）mammary elastography. These courses are recorded and can be watched by DVD and internet afterwards. JSUM has certified fellow systems to assure credentials to be a specialist of ultrasonics. There are Board Certified Fellow, Engineering Fellow and Registered Medical Sonographer. Fellows can get points to be qualified by attending those courses or watching recorded courses. The education committee publishes several textbooks for self-learning of ultrasound technology and diagnostics. JSUM thus has promoted continuing ultrasound education in various ways. How to teach and train ultrasound examination for medical students and young doctors is a next important step to be approached by JSUM.
