Our diagnoses of the condition of a 76-year old woman who was admitted to this institution with loss of consciousness and left hemiplegia was mitral stenosis and atrial fibrillation associated with cerebral thromboenbolism. A floating ball thrombus was observed in the left atrium after admission, on 11 November 1992, during two-dimensional echocardiography performed to locate intracardiac thrombi. The ball thrombus in the left atrium disappeared 18 days after the start of intensive antithrombotic therapy. Here we report this rare case of left atrial floating ball thrombus and review 50 additional cases published in the Japanese literature.
