Ultrasonographic and histological findings were compared retrospectively in 84 patients with liver cirrhosis (22 in groupe Child A, 17 Child B, 20 Child C, 25 with hepatocellular carcinoma; 16 hepatitis B-related, 49 hepatitis non-A non-B-related, 19 alcoholic). Parenchymal echo patterns were classified into 3 types according to the size and the distribution of intrahepatic hyperechoic spots.
By progress of the stage of liver cirrhosis, parenchymal echo pattern belong to the Type III was increased and the uneveness of the hepatic surface became common. In cases with hepatitis B-related liver cirrhosis, the parenchymal echo pattern was increased and the rate of the Type III was high.
Histologically in autopsy cases, the parenchymal echo pattern of liver cirrhosis was believed to be affected by the width of the interstitium and the irregular distribution of nodules.
