To improve the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography for small breast carcinomas, 51 cases with breast tumors less than 10 mm in diameter were investigated over the last four years. We defined the anterior and posterior borderlines of the mammary glands in order to differentiate benign disease from small breast carcinomas.
In malignant tumors, the anterior borderlines were found to be interrupted or rough in 80.4% and the posterior borderlines were in 60.8%. In benign tumors, these borderlines were not interrupted, but rough in 1.6%.
By means of ultrasonography, 7 out of 11 cases (72.7%) with tumors less than 5 mm in diameter were diagnosed to carcinoma, while correct diagnostic rate of total cases of small breast cancer was 88.2%.
In conclusion, ultrasonographic features of the anterior and posterior borderlines of the mammary gland were valuable findings for the differentiation between small breast carcinomas and benign disease.
