Qualitative morphological categories ("shape" and "border") of diagnostic criteria for breast tumors can be transformed to measurable parameters, such as Deformity Index (DI), Marginal Area Index (MAI) and Entropy. These parameters were measured on model figures (circle, ellipse and star) and typical ultrasoic patterns of breast tumor including cysts, fibroadenomas and cancers. Among these three parameters DI and Entropy are thought to be simple and useful in expressing irregularities of figures or tumor shapes. Some problems to be overcome in establishing quantitative methods in ultrasonic diagnosis of breast tumors are discussed with a review of the literature.
