Using Doppler color flow mapping, we evaluated the effects of ductal closure on cerebral blood flow patterns in the middle cerebral artery in 65 full-term neonates. End-diastolic flow velocity, mean diastolic flow velocity, peak flow velocity and mean flow velocity were increased, despite a decrease in the Pulsatility Index (PI). Because PI was markedly influenced by the presence of ductal shunting, we also measured the ratio of the acceleration time to the ejection time (AcT/ET ratio) as an index of cerebrovascular compliance in the middle cerebral artery. The fact that the AT/ET ratio increased significantly following ductal closure suggested increased cerebrovascular compliance in the early neonatal period.
