An ultrasonic assessment of final gastric emptying time (Tx) based on the measurements of the　cross sectional areas of the gastric antrum was performed on 13 patients of diabetic gastropathy. Sequential observations of ultrasounds were done after uptaking of 300 ml liquid diet containing 200 ml of Calorie Mate and 100ml of plain water at 15 min, 30 min, 60 min, 90 min, 120 min, 150 min and 180 min respectively. The mean Tx of the patients with autonomic neuropathy was elongated significantly rather than both those of without autonomic neuropathy and normal controls (p <0.01).
Short RR interval variations on ECG was closely related to the elongation of Tx (p <0.01) which indicated the autonomic neuropathy. The elongation of Tx on diabetic gastropathy expressed the symptom of abdominal full sensation and indicated either time or dose of administration of insulin for these patients. These results indicated that this ultrasonic method of Tx for diabetic gastropathy is useful for the diagnosis of complication of autonomic neuropathy.
