Changes of ultrasonographic findings induced by chemotherapy were evaluated in 97 patients with various liver malignancy. There were 34 responders including minor response, 27 patients of no change and 36 patients of progressive disease by criteria of Japan Society for Cancer Therapy.
Fifty of 97 patients (51.5%) showed changes in sonographic findings after chemotherapy. Ultrasonographic changes observed in the responders were following: disappearance of bull's eye pattern as the change of internal echo, and disappearance of halo and posterior echo enhancement as the change of external echo attendant on tumor. Appearance of acoustic shadow and cystic change of the tumor were also observed in this group as the specific change. On the other hand, these changes in sonographic findings were infrequently occurred in the patient groups of no change and progressive disease. Moreover, these changes were recurred to the findings before chemotherapy when tumor showed regrowth.
These results indicate that ultrasonography is a useful tool for analysis of chemotherapeutic effects in liver malignancy. The chemotherapeutic effects might exactly evaluate not only by estimation of tumor size but also by evaluation of ultrasonographic findings during chemotherapy.
