Researches on tissue characterization which tries to qualify the characteristics of the soft tissue, aiming at the variation of the physical quantity with the propagation of the ultrasonic wave in the living body tissue, become recently active. And objective measuring quantities in these studies are mainly (1) attenuation, and (2) velocity. The former is at first performed by the transmission measurement using a continuous wave, and subsequently the method for characterizing tissue by the calculation of attenuation coefficient using a broad band pulse. Then the trials to get high practicality in the field of clinical application are done up-to-date, using the method of obtaining these quantities by the calculation of echo signal from inside the object. The latter velocity measurement is also performed by the method for detecting the leading edge of the transmission wave. And recently the high accuracy of the measured value has become attainable by the calculation from its phase characteristics.
